Depends entirly on what you may want to do with it. A custom built machine will always be a better choice no matter what.
Pre-built machines are built to sell to a large market of people that do not want to spend a great deal of cash. Therefor the manufacturers buy up hardware stock, most of the time old out dated stock, and add in new chips. All of which is bought in bulk and mass produced with cheap labour. Much the same as Canadain tire or Wallmart does. The price is right but the hardware is substandard. It's the only way they can compete in a fast food world.
A custom built rig comes with that personal touch from a pro builder. Most of these guys can build you something much better because they are in the know so to speak. They thrive on the latest hardware tech trends and know which components will fit and work together for the best preformance in the type of system you are looking for. They are also aware of price points and when to buy what for the best bang for your buck.
Most of these pro builders make little to no proffit on a system. The money is not in the hardware, it is in the service. Pretty well all systems are online and open to corruption no matter how well protected a system is. There is also a large amout of PEBCAK involved which brings more returns in sirvace.
So whats your fancy? What are you planning on doing with this rig and what is your budget?
For that matter, what do you have now? Give a list of the hardware in the machine and it may be upgradeable.

The only problem I see with the cheap name brand boxes, is that they all seem to have on-board video on the motherboard. I don't really like that, as I prefer having a dedicated video card.

Other than that, you ought to get a machine with dual core or better CPU, minimum 2 GB RAM, and minimum 250 GB hard drive.
DVD burner capable of burning dual layer discs is a must have.

Haveing onboard audio is really not a draw back VF, takes little to no resourses especially when a sound card is installed. The major draw backs are the PCB the board construction/date of manufacture and the caps. Most of the time these are substandard. No arguement with not building a clone from this builder, what would be the point? Fact is they have to make money so useing out of date low end hardware is how they do this.
A builder can buy high end hardware from last years stock and assemble for the same kind of money. Or current middle of the road to high end for a few to the sky is the limit dollars. The choice is yours with a custom rig. Warrenty sirvace normally is just around the corner not around the world for the most part. Unless you build yourself, sirvace guy is always on call, lol ! Smile

All modern motherboards have onboard audio. I don't know why you are bringing it up, since audio is not something I even mentioned in my previous post.

No VF all modern motherboards do not have onboard audio, lol.

2 Gb ram.
Nvidia 6600 graphics
300GB hard drive
seagate dd @ 7200 rpm (is that right lol)
external hp dvd 840 drive

not sure what the motherboard board is.
550 watt power thingy.
6 usb 2 ports in total
fire wire
ethernet
wifi
and i think that about it.

i use it for downloading and surfing.
don't too many apps on it
the os is windows xp with all the service packs.

LOL billy , valliat try bud, looks like a fairly good system but if your upgradeing a little better hardware discription will be needed.

D/L and install that app., then run it. Take screens of each tab and post them here. I'll do a little research for you. Smile

Lord liften man, thats not cpu-z Smile Not sure what you used but a screen of cpu-z would be of great help. I'm only looking for mobo manufacture/ram type and manu/ stuff like that. There is just to much useless info there bill.
It is a pretty good system though, not sure why your looking to upgrade. The graphics are old and only DX9 compatable but that card was top notch at on time. Unless you are planning on useing some graphics intensive apps then i see no need to upgrade it.

Is this your board?
I need that cpu-z shot to id the cpu for sure but with the info you provided i see nothing wrong with the chip either. Acording to what i can find out that duel core chip is @2.8GHz stock but will overclock to 4GHz useing air cooling. I really need to confirm the id on the chip but with an upgrade (cheap) to the air cooling system you could more than likly boost your cpu to 3.6GHz and run it there stable. Thats a real speed boost bill for maybe 30 bucks!
Bad news is your maxed out on memory (ram) looks as though the board has a cap of 1Gb per dimm and you only have 2.

To be honest with you bill if your not looking to do some serious gpu work with your PC i would keep it as is. There is nothing wrong with it at all, it's a very respectable little rig man. Smile

Your welcome Bill. Anytime you have an extra 600 bucks you want to spend let me know and i'll design you a really kick ass PC bud. Thats a fairly high end system that will do most anything. But you will have to put it together yourself. Smile

i might as well build a plane or a space ship lol.
i can give instructions and that's about it. here in the phil's we are as up to date as a lot of places. i had to search far and wide before i found a duo chip.

Laptops are to a small degree different when it comes to hardware. Depends on how many dollars you want to spend. Anything less than 1000 dollars Canadain is not worth buying. Then there is the fact that a 600 dollar desktop tower will kick the rear end of any laptop on the market today. Only reason(good one) for haveing a laptop is space and convenience. Other than that i really have no use for them. Not tring to be snotty or anything like that at all but not telling you the way it is would not be right. Haveing said that if i were in the market i would buy an Accer. Smile
