You can take it to a repair shop like Geek Squad and they backup everything. That does not void the warranty.

that will teach ya a thing or two you twat.
![]() i feel for you gcjm i don't have as much to save as most of you it seems. most of what i want can be saved on a few usb keys. addy has an external h/drive and thats about it here.

If it's your business files then that's a bit of a problematic situation. I think I should probably back up now

PC World actually allow you to replace the drive or any drive yourself, that does not void the warranty

So did you find out what it was that busted it?

Sorry to hear about your loss, gcjm.
I almost had a similar experience. My power supply short circuited and almost blew out the motherboard. I have an Intel D865Perl Motherboard bought from Hong Kong that costs a grand fortune. Do you network your computers to a LAN?

That's quite overkill, velvetfog.
I only have two shitty computers, but I'm aspiring everyday to topple your computer setup! Bring in the 486s!

All my Ethernet switches are Netgear brand. I'm not pointing fingers but I think there is some pretty techproud users in the forum. ![]()

I have a D: drive built in my laptop for back up but it has only 15 GB in it. It used to contain the drivers for the laptop but somehow I (very foolishly) ended up deleting its' contents.
I think I should back up into my 120 GB external. Here's a question for the tech-savvy, though. Should I create a system image or just copy-pasta all the files?

Ever thought of some online storage provider, like box.net ?
can also be integrated in firefox with the fireuploader plugin (better than using email). as for system-images, I keep them on external hdd's, updated whenever something new was installed. To save time and hassle with backup always seperate OS from data (partitioning). Private data goes to a true-crypt image file onto an usb-stick and as backup to online storage.

Now all my data's gone and I long for yesterday-ay-ay-ay. Yesterday, The need for back-ups seemed so far away. I knew my data was all here to stay, Now I believe in yesterday.
