Banana Sonnet
#1
Bananas are most difficult to fit
in boxes or in iambs, they rebel
against the straight and narrow path; they split
on Sundaes in a boat that sails to hell
and hip. Redemption for this fruit may come
if, torn and mashed it mingles in a glass
with righteous low-fat yoghurt, maybe some
sweet honey, cinnamon, but then – alas!
It spies the icecream! Oh, it’s lost for good
Such promise… but it’s yellow through and through,
this crooked fiend, and so misunderstood,
both fruit and herb, alone, what shall it do?
The answer’s clear – it has to turn to strippin’
and leave its clothes for idiots to slip in.

... yeah, ok, I have no excuse and no rationale...
It could be worse

actually, the penultimate line is wonderful in that it startled a laugh out of me. Now get back to the "serious" work of writing poetry ,you.

Rutabaga Sonnet

Oh, noble rutabaga, bulbous root
that ever shuns a sonnet's iamb song,
in tougher times you kept the Germans strong
enough to panzer-roll the French. Salute.
Efficient? Even Mickey's can't dispute
your clear superiority, they throng
potato drills like sheep but it is wrong
to farm the meat when they can't stew the shoot.

But have you ever seen a sundae glass?
And when your skin is clean do they still wash it?
Some may mistake you for your brother - beet -
at first you look the same but borsht has sass
the rabbis crave, they shred it up and gnosh it.
Is tasteless mash in Gerber jars a treat?

( I /really/ have no excuse, this isn't even funny!!)

"Well, that was quite a turnip for the books,"
proclaimed the Swede. He paused to look around,
ensuring that the room was free from cooks --
it wouldn't do to have this chamber found.

One must be furtive in the Underground.
There's always someone digging -- someone who
won't hesitate to take whoever's found
and turn the heat up just to make them stew.

Resistance was the only way he knew
to throw the scent off -- burrow deep and hide --
but someone changed the rules. The tension grew
till finally it came to herbicide.

The tatties lost their fight to extra cream...
in Dauphinoise, no-one can hear you scream.
