Learning to speak Texan: Lesson #15
Texan: (north-central dialect with western lilt)
Tha gurl is veery inneresting an pertie ta'boot.
Ah donno whay ya sai tha, imma jus as inneresting an pretie as shey'as.
English:
That girl is very interesting and pretty.
I don't know why you say that, I'm just as interesting and pretty as she.
Idiom of the Day:
ta'boot = also Origin obscure. The phrase "to boot" originally appears to have meant to get something started, as: "laits boot this partee inder rear" (note: the direct article "the" can change by what follows it. As in this case, because the following word starts with an "r" the normally used "da" changes to "der". However there is no rule that governs exactly when these changes will apply. We call these irregular articles). It is uncertain, although there are many theories, as to how this idiom evolved to what it means today. Certainly the fact that it is nearly always used in a positive sense may provide some amount of enlightenment if other facts come to light.
Syntax: It is almost a rule that a sentence in Texas end in a preposition.

The goal is not to obfuscate that which is clear, but make clear that which isn't.
