But what counts as being published? Does it have to be in a literary mag? How many times? I've seen some very mediocre poems in my time whose authors have been able to reel off a list of magazines they've been published in. Not that I've ever checked! I just don't think it's that hard there being so many mags printed and online.

Can one speak of masses in relation to poetry? For the masses poetry implies regular rhyme and metre. You'll do well to spot many such poems in modern poetry mags or winning poetry competitions. They are fashion-led, they publish what's in vogue or what they think is in vogue. Almost all these magazines have what amounts to a Mission Statement - they want innovative, cutting edge poetry which pulls no punches, which engages the reader....and they all print the same type of poem over and over again - the poem as novel, prosetry as it has been named. Now I don't mind prosetry, I've been up that alley myself a few times, but there ought to be room for summat else!

Before criticising a person, try walking a mile in their shoes. Then when you do criticise them, you're a mile away.....and you have their shoes.
