Police as Pigs
"Back in 1809, Sir Robert Peel entered the House of Commons in London - he developed a passion for Sandy Back pigs found in Ireland and began to breed them in Tamworth. Soon, these pigs were known as Tamworth pigs. Pig slang was commonplace in Tamworth because of this, it was in 1829 that the relation to police came into it.
Politicians were concerned about the way London was policed and Sir Robert Peel changed things - his changes resulted in the formation of the Metropolitan Police. This is why police are referred to as 'Bobbies' or 'Peelers'; they were Bobby's boys...
Due to the pig nature that Tamworth had become, the police suffered the same fate as other Tamworth products did: They became related to pigs."
Also again in the 1960's the usage of pig for got became popular, primarily as an a way to agitate the police during protests, and sit ins. The first noted usage is said to be in Aug of 1968 at the Democratic Convention in Chicago. However, I can personally remember people using it before 1968, my recollection is that it was most often involved with protest (beginning in 1964) against the Vietnam war, which per-dates the '68 date by several years. I'm not sure why they were called pigs, outside of it being an obvious insult, and that there was already that connection established. Certainly there was the idea the cop worked for "the man", or the establishment, and was in charge of enforcing restrictive policies. More than anything I think it was just a good insult. Snake, or ass didn't really seem to fit.
