1 in 7 People Think the End of the World is Nigh

And by "nigh", I mean they think the world will end within their lifetime. Meanwhile, 1 in 10 think it will happen in 2012, due to the Mayan calendar myth. (remember the paranoia over Y2K?)

I find this obsession with the apocalypse a bit surprising. Have things really gotten that bleak? Is it because we're experiencing a lot of natural calamities, coupled with the economic crisis. Has it ratcheted up world paranoia somehow?

Personally I don't think the world is going to end any time within our lifetimes (barring an unforeseen mega-asteroid collision or something). But perhaps you guys are more cynical than I

i think the end of the world as we know it is possible in the next 100 years or so. not from natural disaster but from wars. it wont be long before we all armed for bear, someone is bound to do the deed, i think the dead leader of n korea if still alive when they had the bomb, may have been such a person
