A government is needed to hold the lawful monopoly on the legitimate use of force.
Its primary responsibility is to provide fair courts and safe streets.

Everything else (social safety net, industrial interventionism, etc.) that a government does is optional.

True. But we are greedy. And this whole secrecy behind a government means that you can crook things your own way. And the snowball begins .

But we do need them as they bring mostly an overall benefit.
