while praising overall because it made me laugh,
that one word is wrong and yet that word must stay.

Simply, one can come or go whence,
but one cannot merely be whence.
'where' might be more suitable
hence-- but rather dull.

Good point. I originally used "where" and indeed see it as more dull. Whence was literally a last-minute change and, admittedly, I did not consider it quite as carefully as you have.
