A Supermarket Sonnet for Todd

'Tis apples in the trolley first of all;
Tomatoes next, but gently lest they bruise,
then melons, which I must be sure to choose
by firmest flesh, those are the best to ball.
Across the way to seek the butcher's stall
and stop a while to carefully peruse
the rump, or chuck perhaps, for sweeter stews --
I must decide -- oh, how those chops enthrall!

A shopping day need not be dull or so
prosaic as the cardboard boxes grey
and grim that stand impassive, row by row;
I think it more a magical buffet,
a wondrous world where platters overflow,
as long as you've a credit card to pay.
It could be worse
