You are not alone. I, like many others, have a great portion of my mind on stand-by looking for some opportunity for a silly humorism, and yet, were someone to say 'Be funny!' I should be pretty well struck dumb. In fact, this does happen, rather more obliquely. Recently, I had told someone of my first adventures, after larning to swim, when I went to Lido in Hyde Park, stupidly thinking it would be a half-way house between swimming pool and sea. I had not embroiderd much, but had emphasised a lot about my thin little body getting exposed in a changing marquee, and my determination not to back down when a number of 'old boys' walked down into the water as if it was not there (actually, members of the Ice-breakers Club, who swim through the winter). Anyway, a friend shows up, and this woman, still with tears in her eyes, tell her how funny it all was, and how the new person must ask me to tell her the tale. I ducked out.
