I thought I commented on this before. There must be a special reward for bravery beyond the call of duty -- showing your face, I mean - and it is at once something extra, and distracting. I think - in the nicest possible way - it reflects your age, being greatly introspective. That is really as it should be: I find it frightening when I see children/teens marching along in little suits with their fathers in big suits, being sensible and grown up. They will have their moment when least wanted -- at forty, with wife and kids.
I hope this does not sound patronising, though I know it does. I am so mature that I would probably be too shy to do what you do -- even if I could work out how to do it! One concrete thing - again negative, I'm afraid. The 'going down like a lead ballon' bit really is cliche -- could you not maintain the conversational style, with some other phrase?
