Checking the Defences

Watching a repeat of the sitcom Frasier
(as is my custom each morning)
I reflect on a scene where the main character
(a radio shrink) his colleague and her mother
run around like the Three Stooges.
I guess the laugh track is playing because
one doesn’t expect psychiatrists
to behave in such a crass manner,
and I chuckled too, I admit.
But there was something unsettling
about it as well, as if the sea breakers
I’ve long relied on were mocked by an expert
in this sort of thing, my defences, my stronghold
picked apart in a single chase scene.
"We believe that we invent symbols. The truth is that they invent us; we are their creatures, shaped by their hard, defining edges." - Gene Wolfe
