Well if the power breaks down, then the gas will expand and the metal will fall because there is no more polarity..
That is my understanding, feel free to prove me wrong
And they have normally back-up systems and pressured rooms so nothing can blow up or do dangerous stuff... They won't just build something ridiculously unsafe.
EDIT: Billy i think it requires more energy to compress than to tear the bonding inside the atoms.
