S4 is notably off-beat in a frustrating way; I appreciate the metric smoothness of much of the rest, so this really stood out for me

Ah, yes, thanks. I think the feminine endings in the middle are ok for a limerick(?), but not when none of the other stanzas do that.  I'll pencil in:

In the end, as you know, slow as light,
Other axioms proved to have bite.
Minkowski had time
For Einstein to climb
Because Riemann had stayed up all night.
