The Epic

1. Dialogue didn't register to me as either good or bad, but that it had some lines that made me roll my eyes means I can understand why one would think it's bad.
2. I get that too. It wasn't quite my experience, though, because I was sufficiently charmed by everything, but the whole could have been a lot brighter.
3. The question here is the one I don't just get, but one I fully agree with. I don't mind the emphasis on Odysseus' PTSD and whatnot, insofar as it makes a point, but I do remember the cockiness and imperiousness to have been a big part of his original charm---they could have kept more of that in, especially with the Polyphemus episode.
4. This is where I disagree. Maybe we didn't need much of that footage of the Ilioupersis, but I loved seeing it, I loved the Dunkirk-like dread when they were in the horse and the generally-Nolanesque thrill when they were opening the gate. As for the "slow Ithaca parts", I didn't find them slow at all, and if they composed like half the movie I'd actually have been very happy with it. I remember, when I was reading the Odyssey, I was confused why all the "fun" parts took up less than half the book, and then I ended up enjoying the Ithaca portion---really, the Ithaca half---quite a lot, and I think my overall experience with the film was similar. I was expecting to like the oft-retold portions of the book more, and in a lot of ways I did, but I was quite satisfied with how they did Ithaca (especially the dog. The dog!), and I was also satisfied to find the audience around me feel the same.
5. It definitely would have. I wouldn't say all magic was stripped from it---I found Polyphemus, Circe, the Sirens, and the Katabasis to be done really well, however cut relatively short or whatever they were---but it would have been much cooler if Nolan just leaned in, especially in the other parts of the story like the Phaeacians, the gods' involvement with Calypso, or Athena's involvement in Ithaca.

I have been reading comments online and the general prevailing opinion is that I am wrong but . . .

1. The dialog was terrible.  It was all so unnatural and forced with enough rushed and enough slowed to a solilloquoy - I don't know, overall pretty bad dialog in almost every way.
2.  Maybe it is fatique but every "dark epic" feels like it is woven from the same parts to the point it is feeling cliche - the mood, the lighting , the chorus in the background on the important parts, the sounds.
3.  Odysseus was reduced to a one dimensional version of some "war torn, PTSD" version of a soldier it could have been anyone.  Where was the funny, cocky imperious challenger of the gods?  All I found was that mopey, morose sad boy.
4.  It seemed to dwell too much on some boring parts of the story (and some parts that werent even in the story) so it ended up rushing or skipping the fun parts of the story - the actual Odyssey.  We didn't need 30 minutes of Troy footage - save that for the Illiad.  Almost all of the slow Ithaca parts could have been reduced or clipped, etc.  Put the bag of wind back in and give the other adventures more time to breathe - that is what we showed up for.
5.  All practical magic was stripped out of it.  I get why but it would have been so much more courageous to just lean in to them

anyway - I have already been informed many times that I am wrong aobut this

I'd rather do that with.....ooh, maybe Adventure Time? xD
