fr me if you're alcoholic dependent you suffer from alcoholism.
clinically i thing alcohol dependence means you need alcohol in order to mix with others and lead a normal life. alcoholism is term used for alcohol addiction. while the alcoholic would find it extremely hard to withdraw from drinking. the booze dependent person probably would not.
we also have a third kind of boozer,, the social drinker. vf mentioned it. this is the person who drink because his friends do. they basically socialize in the pup or bar with like minded people and get shit faced or not.
for the social drinker booze is very often very easy to give up.
i used to drink between 15 and 30 pints a day every day. i had early doors and stay backs but once i got tired of it i simply stopped doing it. now i just have a drink now and again. last night i had about 12 bottles of beer without any effect as such. no urge to drink more today. the reason is, i'm a social drinker who just has a drink at family gatherings etc.
