Torn Away, Left Behind


Niger River veers a long way around to
reach its delta east of the Bight of Benin
from what seems a relative stone’s throw
to the Atlantic

at that bulge of Africa Europeans
rounded first while seeking for spices, finding
slaves instead for which they could trade “Long Danes” and
rum at the tragic

bulge of western Africa, torn at birth from
distant South America when ancestral
mega-isle, Gondwanaland, shed its fractious
castaway children.
