Early Retirement
I walk down the cinema isle
my silhouette gated and stooped,
the audience of past colleagues
sit silent under art deco curves.
Unaccustomed as I am
I leave the public speaking
in the safe hands of couplets
and killer end rhymes.
The silent arches chuckle
in all the right places,
some included,
some left behind by design.
Its a short film,
black and white
hammers on anvil's
the splash of hot steel.
Too many time lapsed buildings
rattle up out of the ground
seasons slipping snow
between the jerk of fixed cranes
The outro colours a couple
into a corn field, high as our waists,
the sun pulling on our shadows
tall an thin, gated and stooped.
No one waits to read the credits
coffee and cake calls out
from a hired, tired hall
and just like that, with hand shakes and hugs
I retire.
