I think it would be better without the last part, starting with "The secreen rolled up to say".  It's your thoughts that are interesting here.

You're probably right.  The explanation doesn't really add anything.

Perhaps I could add something about the potential of Australia... it seems so close on the map, just around that lower right-hand corner, knowing the edges must connect somehow.  But the north-south nearness is an illusion caused by spreading the middle out to equalize areas.
