This piece was part of a thread, written to a prompt.
Sometimes it's difficult for me to see a piece objectively when it's surrounded by the context of a prompt and the other pieces in a thread, and I think that happened here to some degree. I'm guessing that the cliche of "a million little pieces" wasn't fully or properly subverted and just read as a straightforward cliche. Perhaps the hyperbole of 'thousand' isn't helping.
As far as pop culture references, I try not to use them much because shows and artists get cancelled or fall out of fashion and then your work drags along behind. The rest of the time I just do what I want.
But, here, I wasn't trying to reference any particular artist or show.
I think it's so interesting how some people read this as being very teenager and others are like, wow, you're so old.
It's always curious how interpretations differ; I am eternally intrigued by the human mind.
I appreciate all sincerely-offered thoughts and responses, even if unflattering. >
