2nd Annual Poems About Pets Month
#5
We inherited two cats
from a dead son,
Levon is big, gray and somewhat dim,
Rosie is a tiny calico princess
with a penchant for evil.
They are brother and sister
fight and play like siblings do.
My dog Buster was here first
but they are jealous of his dog door
and torment him
whenever he comes in from outside.
He wags his tail, confused and trusting.

I once said aloud
while my son was still living
that I expected to end up with his cats.
I’ll always regret that too true prophecy
and secretly dislike the cats
for letting it come true.
But I treat them kindly, let them out
early mornings, before sunrise,
remembering always
they were the last to be with his living form.
Maybe I’m just jealous too.
