2nd Annual Poems About Pets Month
#4
Jill spied a chubby calico
enclosed within the chicken pen.
Ignoring nervous clucks from hens,
it calmly made itself at home.

Soon, Jill brought eggs and milk to charm
this queen who claimed her as its page.
Both parents said it must remain
a mouser hunting in the barn.

But, treats and tuna bowls crept north --
beside the pump house, then the shed.
And while it's waistline gently spread,
its territory reached the porch.

As weather chilled, the parents warmed
and bought the cat a flannel bed.
At last inside, it lay and bled,
then licked its kittens, newly born.
