Happy Trails
I dream of casual walks
along the Sugarland trail
with good old Jack
still leading the way.
I carried a walking stick
back then, to clear away
webs weaved across the path
overnight, and to prod
among underbrush, or test
the depth of the creek.
I lost my walking buddy
years back, but this stick
goes everywhere I go now,
and well-meaning people
offer unwanted assistance,
yet they cannot help me
dream of casual walks.
And I've come to realize
as I've slowed down, the years
somehow sped up.
