2nd Annual Poems About Pets Month

Amor Perros

I saw him along the highway
between Lometa and Lampasas
on an October day
made a u-turn
got out of the truck and sat in the weeds
until I could coax him to me.
He was almost hairless with mange,
skin and bones, a puppy.
I put him in the passenger seat,
and got back in the truck;
he’s been with me ever since,
to South Dakota to see the Black Hills,
Colorado to buy weed,
New Mexico, walking the Sangre de Christos,
and to underworlds looking for my son’s ghost.

He’s slept with me every night for six years,
so I guess I’m saying,
I don’t need Forgiveness anymore.
I got Buster.
