Everton vs Leicester City

Watching this fixture
play out, a foggy night in a Mersey-side stadium,
outside its domain
angry explosions began
to drown out the play in my ears.

The announcer was careful to explain my fears
“It’s Guy Fawkes Day” the announcer relayed.
“We’re not celebrating the plot,
but the spoiling of the plot,” he assured.

Poor Guy,
“The gentler tortures to be used unto him
et sic per gradus ad ima tenditur.”

Clever Guy
sentenced to be hanged, drawn and quartered
he cheated the executioner
by making a leap and breaking his neck
in the hanging.

So the match continued,
Leicester in black, Everton in blue,
I thought of Guy’s time on the rack,
while a beautiful game played on
amid the explosions he so fervently imagined.

Hey TqB,
I really like this, your mixing the history with the soccer game.  "V is for Vendetta" is one of my favorite movies, which is how I know about the history.  I know, typical American.  I think the last two lines really work but, to be honest, not sure why.
