		Christmas Legacy
There is in the Christmas story
lightness and depth belying
its blatant (to sophisticates)
pagan antecedents–
Herakles son of Zeus
strangled serpents in his crib
performed great deeds
and ascended, deified–
but Zeus never saw his world
through newborn eyes
nor died in pain with only faith
assuring him of death’s impermanence.
Eastern transmigration? Yes–
but with purpose rather than
mere merit.
