Gray Thursday
Like a tired and ashy-backed
old mule the fourth day pulls
reluctantly. Hump’s past
and joyous Friday’s harness-off
is future out of mind and sight.
Thursday hesitates but perseveres
too tired to kick, too winded
to bray even a justified complaint.
It’s downhill, Jack, but that
just makes it harder on the ankles
and worry about being run
over by that heavy dam’ cart
with no more brakes
than a cuckoo clock.
