Forward march

Footprints in the snow,
swurving trails;
overlapping and interceding.

Looping around--
ricocheting back and forth.
Wandering aimlessly
through the bare woods
leading to 
an army of vagabonds.

Hunched over in their thick coats.
Little clouds of carbon suspended in the air behind them
trailing like steam train smoke .

Shuffling across
a fresh sheet of powder snow
spanning for miles ahead
shining under the callice sun
with no end in sight.

Stripped trees,
wispy stratus clouds,
malnourished deer;
a thinning herd of people,
weeker ones collapse and die--
and are left behind.

They trek to no where
for no reason.
Traveling across no-man's-land
in search of something

anything.
