The Teachings of Apana Chang
#1
My ancient ancestor is like
a cornered rat in Panama
who without curiosity questions himself,
his alibi like a dead fish in Egypt
in secret service to dreams.

The head in a box says
fear is like a red boned dog in a circus
his deception called Maybe-Not.

A cat with sand in its eye may elaborate three truths:
Every wise man follows great pain.
Good liars cannot distort the Feathered Serpent.
A guilty conscience turns a lowly sandwich
into a fast woman’s smile.

Shanghai tongue is something unusual,
like a foolish rooster who escaped from Yesterday:
“Great happiness” when “go” means “go.”

Never bait a trap with a ladies’ Boy Scout knife.

My ancient ancestor goes once without supper:
thus the blind man feels fortune when the real proverb says,
“One stubs big toe, makes telephone out of dust
like a glass eye in the City in Darkness.”
