Absolutely Not: a Sonnet
Dennis got me the job in the Chemistry
Library. My boss was Cecil Butcher,
who looked like Leopold Bloom come to life,
he had a funny way of rubbing his
nose, almost taking a pick, while he talked
to you about his Leopold Bloom life.
I knew as much science as a field mouse
so it was quite an adventure to be
surrounded by things like Acta Chemica
Scandinavica and once I found an
article called "The Endlessness of the World"
published in a German chemical journal
in December nineteen forty-four. In back
black iron crosses marked war dead chemists.
