Hello-
Thank you both for reading and commenting.
I worked in downtown DC for 18 years, and I drove by the Tidal Basin and Jefferson memorial many times, at the break of dawn, when the cherry blossoms were at their peak. Sometimes I would get out of my car just to stand there looking across the Basin at Jefferson, among the glorious blossoms. Other than a stray jogger, photographer, painter, or gardeners, it was just me. Just me, standing in the sublime silence of that majestic scene.
For those few moments, Jefferson was not a statue, DC was not the nexus of political power, I was not a cog in the daily machination... I was a transfixed witness to the sublime, standing within the presence of virtuoso musicians as their symphony swelled over the still waters of the Tidal Basin. I was invited to participate in the rapture of creation... For those few moments, I could barely hold back tears, as I stood among the surging beauty, the uplifting music of spring.
I can only hope, that one day, if you ever visit DC, you may have such an honor. If not, find it in the places that you live: that power, that glory, that reassurance of the fleeting beauty of life.
I sincerely wish it for you,
Mark
