After reading this and then thinking about it, the most apt thing I can say is that I hardly recognize these people. I mean it is such a fresh view of the migrations.
My only gripe might be the last two lines. Had to be fear for them to be brave, if that makes any sense. Otherwise, a vivid picture that puts reader in the boat with them.
