The Way We Color Now

Have you noticed lately, cars have
lost their colors?  They’ve gone shades of
gray as if their owners feared to
be identified with one side
or another based on what their
choice tells partisans about them.

Take, for instance, rosy red which
says “conservative” to haters
of that faction just as green or
brown cry “prog” to non-tree huggers.
Yellow says “Chinese” and orange
well, this president enrages
all who lost to him (that’s many).
As for blue, police detractors
scream their hate with rocks and torches.

Cyan and magenta fade too
easily for automotive
uses.  As for white, it stands for
privilege to burning leftists
even more than black (means wealthy
owners if it lacks for pimping).

So we many, fearful, choose from
shades of gray and silver to be
safe from outrage: mine’s a darkish
grayish silver called “magnetic”
after magnetite.  I’m safely
uncommitted.

              Oh, sweet heavens!
Gray’s Confederate!  Now haters
will come after me with vengeance.
Find some cans of chartreuse paint or
mauve, yes, purple’s meaningless at
least until it’s got a party.

With apologies to Hiawatha.  For other parts of the anglosphere, color = colour.
