A fair response. In the year after I left the deterrence business, I had a severe revulsion to it - provoked by Churchill's revulsion at the things done on his watch, particularly in World War I. Then I gradually recovered: Churchill's sentiments resulted from deterrence's failure while my kind of mathematical deterrence had succeeded up to then. And still does, God knows why.
Politics is a contest for control of organized armed force by various means short of its use. In this it has much in common with deterrence, don't you think?
