ummm, I don't think a poet could get away with it used like that in that situation. And in the current political climate here he will get away with it just fine, he's letting his voters know just where he stands, I'm sure plenty will feel he's just their guy. The masquerade of open-mindedness and nonprejudicial beliefs is quickly falling. It remains to be seen if this is truly the majority of the country. It may be.

I think what's failing her is imputing racism (or some kind of -ism) whenever someone makes a telling comment, humorous or not.  Racism certainly exists (though, for the most part, on the side pointing fingers away from its own beloved race-hatreds), but by now the accusation has lost its sting among rational people.  To mangle a Texas-ism, that wolf don't hunt here any more.
