Wound down windows


As I fell off the conveyor belt
coded with matrimony
I was packed in to the back seat,
stared out at the shop windows
unseen hands over my mouth.

I would listen to the driver
as he slowed down to talk
his words swept away loose strands of hair,
revealing the coy and confident.
They pressed a warm palm to a reddening cheek,
helping the want to but slowly's,
and slightly lifted the hems of the come on then's.

It takes a certain type
to keep a body so tight it looks good
when fingernails drag across it.
My box got wet in the rain
but it's full and easy to carry
with enough hands to hold it.

I can ride shotgun now
with opening lines like my wife and I.
He's a melted medallion
with side burns that needed shaving.
His body still looks the same
traded with the devil,
got the gain without the pain.

I see all the first steps
as they fall down his stairs
and shake my head and acknowledge
when his eyes find a way inside
and his words dress you up
in clothes you've never worn before,
then even I would open my door.
