It may be different in the U.S. but in Britain they were taken from their families at a young age and placed in psychiatric hospitals, or 'asylums' as they were called then... A place of safety and sanctuary indeed.
But I'm talking about people with Down's syndrome and autism. I've heard a lot of horrific stories of how it used to be back then. It wasn't until the late 80's and early 90's that a thing called 'Care in the Community' was introduced and all those people were released from hospital, some of whom were there for over 40 years.
It's a sad part of Britain's history.
