The Interview
So tell me, who are some of your favorite poets?
-None really, but I think Muhammad Ali was pretty good…
Muhammad Ali is not a poet, he was a boxer.
-Well, it's not like his main job, but everybody knows "float like a butterfly, sting like a bee."
Hmm... what poets would you say have influenced your work?
-None really. I like to come up with my own ideas, so I don't want other ideas getting my ideas off track.
But if you aren't aware of other ideas, what do you compare your ideas with?
-Oh, well, they just feel right, and my friends think I'd make a really good poet.
Hmmm… what do write about?
-I just write whatever comes into my head, you know, like thoughts… about God, or my girlfriend, and poverty. And, oh yeah, definitely injustice, and how, like, people treat each other. I got one about hate that I call "I Hate Hate", that everybody thinks is great.
Everybody, like who?
-You know, like my friends, and stuff.
That's great… What type of poetry do you write?
-Mostly, stuff like, stream of conscience. Like "I Hate Hate". It goes like:
I hate hate for being cruel, and it's uncool to be a fool
to thinks hate’s cool to tolerate. Make no mistake, for coolness sake,
let’s rage and rule against all hate. Don't be no fool, don’t hesitate,
Let’s beat the Hell right outta hate!
Hmm… that does sound fairly angry, and…
-Yeah, right!! You see, that's exactly what I mean. My poetry just flows out of me, and I never studied any of that stuff about sonnets or haiku, or rhymes or anything. I just let it out by stream of conscience.
Stream of conscience? You mean stream of consciousness, right? I certainly agree that it's flowing right out of you.
-Yeah. That's my style.
Well... what questions do have for me?
-Do you work on Holidays?
Maybe, maybe not.
-What are the hours?
None, specifically. Could be early morning, 2am til dawn.
-What's the pay?
You're kidding, right?
-I thought this was like a real job was for a professional poet, right?
Our message said, “Poets with professional demeanor needed for special project”.
-So you don’t have a real job for a professional poet?
No more than there are real jobs for Professional Friends.
-Man, this really sucks!!
So tell me, who are some of your favorite poets?
