Dear Tom-
I suspect that you will never be able to read this poem aloud.
The rhymes are just spot on, and I am sure that you took great care to get this one right. Any further comment would seem downright cruel.
Every year older that my dog gets, I feel a gnawing dread that can't be spoken. I should have known better than to have another dog in my life. In my heart.
Even after almost 30 years I still think almost daily of old Buck, a pure black shepherd with only a white "tie" on his chest. My bother refuses to talk about him, but I praise Bucky often. He has assumed legendary status. He gained his independence on the 4th of July. I still see the smile on face, comforting us silly humans til the very end. Damnit, now I'm gonna cry again... How do dogs do this to us?
Sorry doesn't say it, brother. May good memories bring you comfort.
