Had she not been cleaning with the idea of making the attic into a room, she would never have discovered the small crate hidden so well in the corner that all the many past residents of this house had failed to find it. If the thickness of the dust layer was any clue to the long time it had remained hidden, then certainly the news clipping glued to the top confirmed that assessment. She couldn’t read much German, but she could translate the phrase “Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei,“  “Nazi Party”.
She had never seen such a crate. It was so finely put together, no screws, nails, or glue used (much better workmanship in fact than that used in making her own furniture), it seemed to her to be a work of art. She carefully pried the lid off  so as not to damage it; hoping to find a great treasure. What she found was disappointment. A treasure maybe, but not any kind she could understand: small black leather covered boxes that opened to reveal tiny rolls of paper with faded unintelligible writing on them. How the little roll popped out when you opened the box reminded her of Chinese fortune cookies. However, as God had never rescued her from anywhere their use completely bypassed her. She gave the odd little boxes to her girls for playthings, but  kept the crate for herself to display on the white, built-in bookshelf in the living room. Ha! Let her friends try to outdo that!

How long after picking up the brush, the first masterpiece?

The goal is not to obfuscate that which is clear, but make clear that which isn't.
