The metaphor's quite intentional, but it's a lesser one.
Restaurants around here offer free meals to vets on
vet-day. Vets (such as George and I) are 'served' with
special menus that offer low-priced items (meatloaf)
and exclude higher ones (steak). This detail is not
lost on us plebeians. We expect, are used to, and would
be shocked to experience anything to the contrary.
BUT, luckily, there's one bar around here whose vet-day
ablutions include the offering of free beer. While this is
a terrible mistake (in SO many ways...), it provides us
with the false courage needed to accomplish our
traditional vet day food crawl.
