Yep, there's definitely a difference. Here when we say "beet" we're referring to silverbeet or its relatives, which are a bit like spinach. Beetroot is beetroot.
(I just quickly googled and apparently in other places, silverbeet is called chard. That's nearly as funny as when I found out that those "mange tout" the British were always going on about were just bloody snow peas
