There is a lot more to the word than written in this short reply but this whole thing is a contrivance to carry a device...the punch line. Argue amongst yourselves about its length, repetition or inconsequentiality but the ending is designed by evolution to make the reader go Doooohhhhh!...which is another way of saying "Oh fuck!"
