String theory is a science fiction story with no basis in reality. The real question is how does one bend space? The answer is by mass. Gravity is a fictitious force, just like centrifugal force. So the real question is what is space that it is able to be bent by mass? I say space is composed of tiny little apertures that bend easily in the direction of mass, and bend with difficulty away from mass. This is just as probably as string theory and just as provable.
