Raindrops in the Hellespont
I lit the lamp, like any other night,
and waited by the window in the gown
that you love best. I pictured you
making your powerful strokes across the strait,
braving the storm to consummate our love.
You were late, as usual, and I dozed off.
I didn't see the wind blow out the light.
You must have felt so lost, and swam around
in circles for who knows how long. I cried
at morning, snow had turned to rain -
I saw you washed ashore like driftwood, tears
from Venus splashing in the skim beside
you where you lay. I sang the song of falling,
and dove to join the splashes by your side.
