Wow that's super interesting true! You don't happen to have a the study online or something do you? I'd be really interested in reading it.
Did all the participants have the same native language? If so it'd make sense that the mistakes they made came from their own language, making it easier for speakers of that same language to understand the convolution of the new one. Like how French speakers say "I am agree" instead of "I agree" (from the French "Je suis d'accord") because that makes more sense to them.
