No large files are being transfered just pc to pc chat.
Hosting provides professional 24x7 web server service onto 100BaseTX Internet trunks or better.
Some ISPs, such as mine, Telus, prevents their consumer broadband users from running servers on TCP ports 21, 25, 80 & 443
Broadband customers have to pay commercial rate for that.
As far as the ports go why not use another one that is not blockaded?
Correct me if I am wrong but a port is a port is it not?
The only difference that I can see that stands out like a sore thumb are the data transfer rates both up and down.
Now I don't know much about Linux either but this is running on 64bitXP so having to have Linux seems to be incorrect also. Now this is just an observation from seeing myBB running and joining a forum that is being put up this way.
Actually starting your own forum is pretty darn easy and cost's absolutely nothing extra as far as I can see. Except for the extra hydro if you don't normally leave your PC turned on all the time and the extra wear and tear on your hardware which as a rule lasts alot longer than most people keep it anyway.
As for the professional web server part.... right.
