you should be able to open these types of files with windows

right click any open office doc icon not the open office program icon
click the line of text that says open with
tick the box that says always use the selected program to open this kind of file.

if word isn't listed

click the browse button
when you find the word program click on it
press the ok button.

Thanks Billy! Yes I can reopen them with MS office word. I just don't understand why they defaulted to open word when they were written in MS office Word.
