Quote:The British government condemned China's execution of a British national Tuesday on drug smuggling charges.

"I ... am appalled and disappointed that our persistent requests for clemency have not been granted," Prime Minister Gordon Brown said. "I am particularly concerned that no mental health assessment was undertaken."

Akmal Shaikh was convicted of carrying up to 4 kilograms (8.8 pounds) of heroin at the Urumqi Airport in September 2007. China says he received due process under its laws, and he exhausted his appeals last week.

The British Foreign Office confirmed Tuesday's execution, however, there was no immediate comment from China.

Ahead of carrying out the death sentence, China said it had followed the law.

should foreign nationals be treated the same way as the (for want of a better word) natives. should countries bow to the demands of say in this case; the UK. why should foreigners be treated any differently.
not just re the death sentence cases but all cases. often we hear of people being released early because one government stepped in for them
personally i think it's hog wash. if you commit a crime in another country you should be tried by their laws. the uk are crying foul because it's the right thing to do but is it? shouldn't we applaud when these people get caught. i know i do.
